Europe Speech 2023 by Roberta Metsola
On November 9, 2023, the 14th annual Europe Speech took place. Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, delivered an inspiring speech to more than 500 invited guests, including many young individuals, envisioning an optimistic and forward-looking development for Europe.
The KAS Makerthon Europe showcased innovative ideas from young Europeans, with the audience voting for the winner who subsequently participated in a discussion with President Metsola following the Europe Speech. Philipp Lahm, Tournament Director of the UEFA European Championship 2024, also provided insights into the upcoming largest European sports event in 2024, with its final scheduled to take place in Berlin on July 14, 2024.
In her address, President Metsola emphasized the importance of global responsibility, addressing extremist narratives, and safeguarding the principles of the EU. She discussed events in the Middle East, highlighting the need for a political solution. The event also featured pitches from young Europeans on topics such as climate policy, global competition, polarization, and the role of the EU in the world. The winner proposed an EU Buddy Program focused on networking and cultural exchange.
Christian Johann, the Head of the European Academy Berlin, moderated the event and expressed enthusiasm for the outcomes of the evening:
Roberta Metsola impressed the audience with her speech. More importantly, her concrete aspirations for the future demonstrated how keenly the President understands the situation in Europe. Her desire to celebrate a common European event in five years with fewer security checks also inspired the young participants, all of whom demonstrated excellent achievements and a keen interest. I thank the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for the event, and I am pleased that the European Academy Berlin could contribute to this Berlin European event.
The event concluded with a call to the younger generation to participate in the 2024 European elections. Philipp Lahm emphasized the role of sports in promoting democracy and encouraged youth to appreciate the privileges of a peaceful, democratic system.
